What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a replacement tooth root, usually made of titanium that is placed in the jaw bone as a structured anchor for a fixed or removable tooth replacement.

When it comes to replacing teeth as a patient, you have many viable options such as crowns, bridges, dentures. Dental implants offer a natural feeling and looking tooth replacement option that prevents jawbone loss in the patient after tooth loss or extraction. Which could come as a result of using removable dentures as a tooth replacement solution. A dental implant is a strong, durable option that when coupled with a crown offers full function of the once missing tooth or teeth.

Dental implants are able to offer the patient stability and structure thanks to a process called osseointegration. During osseointegration the implant itself will fuse into the bone, resulting in a root that when a replacement tooth is added feels virtually 100 percent natural. Most patients who have undergone a dental implant surgery claim that their implant and replacement tooth offer much more in the way of confidence, security and comfort as opposed to alternative options.

Common Reasons for Dental Implants

•  Dental implants, because they are fused into the bone and therefore give the replacement tooth resistance, help to maintain healthy bone levels.
•  A dental implant and replacement combined give the most natural replacement tooth appearance available.
•  Dental implants help to give support to over dentures.

Dental Implants – The Procedure

Dental Implants in Redmond, Oregon with Clark Family DentistryYour dental implant procedure will begin with an individualized treatment plan consultation from your Dr. Clark. The plan will be composed by our trusted team of professionals that are highly experienced in restorative dentistry and oral surgery.

Once your treatment plan has been determined the surgical part of the procedure will begin.

•  After administering the proper anesthesia, the site will be prepared for the implant by opening the gum to expose the gum area. Dental implants require a healthy and adequate amount of bone and therefore if there is not enough bone present, bone grafting may be necessary. Healthy bone will be prepped by using a special drill to make a place for the titanium implant.
•  The implant will gently be situated in the prepared opening where the gum tissue will then be sutured around it. You can expect the sutures to be removed far before the healing process is complete usually about seven days after surgery. We generally expect a three to six month healing process, during which time osseointegration will take effect. During this time, the implant will become one with the jawbone.
•  Once the healing is complete, you will return to the office to have the abutment placed. An abutment is a small connector post whose purpose is to securely hold the replacement tooth. You will have impressions done of your teeth and your bite in order to create the perfect replacement.
•  Once the replacement porcelain tooth has been fabricated to match the shape, size, bite and color of your existing teeth, it will then be permanently cemented to the abutment. This replacement tooth is known as a crown. The crown, whose shade will perfectly match your natural teeth will appear natural itself.

It is important to understand that not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants require an adequate amount of bone and healthy gums. At Clark Family Dentistry, we will review your specific situation and help you to determine if a dental implant is the best tooth replacement option available to you.
